Status Effects have been in the games since the Red & Green hit Japan in 1996. They are vital in battle and help you to hinder your foes. However, they are also used on yourself and as of the 3rd generation, many Pokémon have benefits from being afflicted with Status Condition and as such a Pokémon can only have one major status condition afflicted on it at any one time.
There are many items around that will heal the certain status conditions...sometimes even all of the possible ones. However there are also some items that will give the user the particular status condition and some which if flung, will give the opponent that status condition. There are also some moves & abilities that prevent status conditions from being placed, such as Safeguard, Leaf Guard & Misty Terrain.
Some Pokémon even have stats boosted if inflicted with a Status Condition; Guts boosts Attack, Marvel Scale boosts Defense & Quickfeet boosts Speed.

As of Pokémon Sun & Moon, you can even cure status ailments using the Pokémon Refresh feature for no cost.
There is also a move that does double damage if the Pokémon is afflicted by one of the main Status Conditions.

The status types and the effects are as follows:
Burn
Burn is one of the seldom used status afflictions, despite the fact that it has serious reprecussions on the Pokémon on which it is afflicted. Effects:Each turn, the Pokémon afflicted with the Burn loses 1/8th of it's Max HP. As of Sun & Moon, this has been lowered to 1/16th of its Max HP The Pokémon's Physical Attack Stat is cut by Half. This effect does not work on Pokémon with the Guts ability The Pokémon's Special Attack Stat is doubled on Pokémon with the Flare Boost ability Immunities: Fire Type Pokémon Pokémon with the Comatose, Thermal Exchange, Water Bubble or Water Veil abilities Methods of Healing Being a Pokémon with the Natural Cure ability and switching out, Hydration while its raining or having the Shed Skin ability Using the attacks Heal Bell or Aromatherapy on yourself or Sparkling Aria on a Burned target. Freeze
Freezing is another seldom used status affliction, mostly due to the limited ways of afflicting it. Paralysis
Paralysis is one of the more commonly used status afflictions. It is able easily to immobolize your foe and give you the upper hand Effects:The Pokémon afflicted's Speed stat is reduced to 25% of it's maximum. From Sun & Moon, the Speed drop has been altered to be 50% of its maximum. Pokémon with the Quick Feet ability are not affected Power of the move Smelling Salts on Paralysed targets has the power doubled The Pokémon has a 25% chance of being unable to attack each turn Immunities: Pokémon with the Comatose or Limber ability Electric-type Pokémon Methods of Healing Being a Pokémon with the Natural Cure ability and switching out, Hydration while its raining or having the Shed Skin ability Use of the move Smelling Salts will cure paralysis on the target Using the attacks Heal Bell or Aromatherapy Using the aforementioned items or the specialised ones that follow:

Poison
Poison is another commonly utilised status affliction. It gradually lowers the Pokémon's Hit Points until the Pokémon faints Effects:The Pokémon loses 1/8th Max HP each turn Attacks by Pokémon with the Merciless ability will always Critical Hit If the Pokémon has the Poison Heal ability, they will heal by 1/16th HP every turn and not receive Poison damge. If the Pokémon has the Toxic Boost ability, their Attack stat is increased by 50% while poisoned. The moves Barb Barrage and Venoshock have its power doubled on a Poisoned target If the Pokémon has the move Venom Drench used on it, its Attack, Special Attack and Speed drop 1 stage. For every 4 steps the trainer takes, the Pokémon loses 1 HP until it reaches 1 HP remaining (Pre-Black & White) Immunities: Poison Type & Steel Type Pokémon (unless being Poisoned by Pokémon with the Corrosion ability). Badly Poisoned
Badly Poisoned acts like Poison in the same manner, however the effects it gives is cumulative. It only lasts in the battle it was afflicted in, in which it reverts to normal poison
Effects:The Pokémon loses 1/16th Max HP for the first turn and then adds 1/16th to the amount to be lost so on 2nd turn 2/16th, 3rd 3/16th and so on until the Pokémon faints

Sleep
Sleep is the primary used status affliction as it is utilised in conjunction with a healing move, however it is also good at stopping your opponent in it's tracks. Pokémon with the ability Comatose have all the effects of this status but without the status. Before Pokémon X & Y, the sleep counter would reset when you switch out but from X & Y, it is retained Effects:The Pokémon cannot attack for a set amount of turns, the turn count is lowered with the Early Bird ability
