Location: Verity Lakefront

At the start of the game, as you leave your house, you will bump into Barry who is out looking for you. He saw the TV show about the hunt for Red Gyarados at a lake and decides it's up to the two of you to go find one, so he accompanies you to Lake Verity. When there, you meet Professor Rowan and Dawn/Lucas who make a quick exit but leaves his briefcase behind. As you approach the briefcase, you both are attacked by wild Starly and Barry suggests using the Pokémon inside.

Afterwards, you have to go to Sandgem Town with Barry to speak to Professor Rowan who will let you both keep your Pokémon.

Location: Route 203

When you reach Route 203, Barry will stop you and ask if you have grown any stronger and will quickly challenge you to a match.

When you have defeated the Gym, he will bump into you again and mention that the next gym is in Eterna City, but the only way to get there is to go back through Jubilife City.

Location: Hearthome City

After you have looked for Fantina and gone to the Super Contest Hall, you will find Barry in Hearthome City. He insists on battling you right then and there saying you need to always be ready.

After you beat the gym, he'll tell you that Professor Rowan is at the library and wants to speak to you all. Here, Rowan will give the details on Galactic's plan and suggest everyone go check out the lakes, sending Barry to Lake Acuity.

Location: Lake Acuity

After you have dealt with Team Galactic at both Lake Verity and Lake Valor, Professor Rowan will recommend you go find Barry in Lake Acuity and see how he's faring. When you reach there, you will see that he has just been defeated by Team Galactic Commander Jupiter. He is despondant and insists he needs to get stronger in order to help take down Team Galactic.

Location: Spear Pillar

As you reach Spear Pillar and Cyrus starts to unleash his plans, you will get stopped by mars and Jupiter, who go to battle you. However, Barry rushes in and interrupts, joining you as a Battle Partner against both Jupiter and Mars.

Location: Fight Area

Once you have beaten the Elite Four, Barry will come in and say to go to an island in the north east via a boat at Snowpoint City. When you go on the boat, you will meet him and he'll telly ou about some treasure. Buck will overhear and interject telling him how the treasure hunt is. Barry will insist he can get stronger and find the treasure

if you go to the Battle Tower, Barry will bump into you and rush in saying he's joining to see how strong he is before he heads to Stark Mountain, and muses about how it won't be long before he sees Palmer.

From here, Barry will appear as an opponent in the Masters Doubles part of the Battle Tower

Location: Stark Mountain

When you reach Stark Mountain, you will find Barry. He will comment about how Buck has defeated him, and will remain in Stark Mountain

Location: Fight Area

After getting the National Pokédex, you will be able to find your rival by the entrance to the Battle Tower. On Saturdays and Sundays, he will arrive and will be willing to battle you. His team improves with later fights after you have defeated the Elite Four 20 times.
