Articuno is one of the three legendary birds of Kanto. It was awakened from its self-inflicted frozen state on the Seafoam Islands by Team Rocket, and captured by the organization. It was later merged with Zapdos and Moltres into the three-headed Zapmolcuno, until it was freed by the Kanto Dex Holders. During the Mask of Ice incident, Blue captured it and borrowed its powers in fighting Lugia and Ho-oh at the Ilex Forest.
