Meloetta, The Melody Pokémon. The melodies sung by Meloetta have the power to make Pokémon that hear them happy or sad. Its melodies are sung with a special vocalization method that can control the feelings of those who hear it.
Overview
Meloetta is the epitome of a weird Pokémon. It was the often forgotten Mythical of Generation V but it has a unique feature, it can learn the move Relic Song which allows for it to change form and type. Unfortunately, as that's only an in-battle transformation, it's not the best competitive choice. Its stats and movepool do allow for it to be somewhat useful in places, but anything it can do, other things can do better
Positives
+ Solid Special Attack at 128
+ It does have a decent and varied movepool, like most Normal-types, so it can cover a lot of ground
+ Only two weaknesses; Bug & Dark and it's immune to Ghost.
Negatives
- Relic Song & the form change is just pure gimmick and not that competitively viable
- Physical Defense is not the best. It's 77, and so physical moves can take it down.
- Its Speed as 90 is just not solid enough
- Its two weaknesses are among the more commonly used move types
Abilities
Serene Grace: The chances of a move having a secondary effect is doubled. - This is always a fantastic ability. Doubling the chances of special effects like Burn, Confusion etc. is always fantastic
Movesets
An Offensive Melody
- Calm Mind
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball/ Dazzling Gleam / Hyper Voice
Item Attached: Colbur Berry
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs and Nature:
4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
This set is a rather standard Calm Mind set. If you can set off the Calm Mind, then Meloetta will do a lot of damage with the Psychic STAB and Shadow Ball provides great coverage. Focus Blast is always good for taking down Steel and Normal-types as well, despite its low accuracy. Dazzling Gleam is a new option that can handle those pesky Dark-types that may threaten Meloetta, especially Spiritomb which used to be the biggest threat to Meloetta
Chosen Aria
- Hyper Voice
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Dazzling Gleam
Item Attached: Choice Specs
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs and Nature:
4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
This set is a rather standard Choice Specs set. This set is aimed to go in and get the most damage with Meloetta's strong Special Attack. Psychic and Hyper Voice get the STAB while the other moves provide the coverage that Meloetta needs.
Other Options
- Energy Ball: Another good move that can provide decent coverage
- Relic Song: Yes, it is gimmicky, but changing form and having a mixed set can definitely keep your opponent on their toes.
- Thunderbolt: Always a decent move for a Special Attacker, it helps provide coverage. Alternatively you could go Thunder and trade the accuracy for move damage plus a whopping 60% chance of Paralysis
Countering Meloetta
Spiritomb has always been the main counter of Meloetta, but since Dazzling Gleam has become a thing, it is a bit less so. It can still be used as a check to Meloetta. Alternatively, go for bulky Pokémon, and Steel-types which can take the hits that Meloetta can dish out. Meloetta is a frail Pokémon physically (or specially if you changed forms inexplicably)
