Entei, The Volcano Pokémon. A Pokémon that races across the land. It is said that one is born every time a new volcano appears. It is said that when it roars, a volcano erupts somewhere around the globe. Entei embodies the passion of magma. This Pokémon is thought to have been born in the eruption of a volcano. It sends up massive bursts of fire that utterly consume all that they touch.
Overview
I'm not even sure how properly describe my love for Entei. It just owns. Like no joke I have been in love with this mon ever since I saw Pokémon The Movie 3 with my Dad in theaters way back in the day. Which is crazy because that almost seems like a lifetime ago now. It has a great design and everything about is super cool. Sadly competitive wise that has not always been the case. In fact it was easily the most neglected of the Legendary Dog/Beasts Trio for a long stretch oftime. It wasn't until the end of Gen 4 when it got a shiny wifi event distribution that granted it Flare Blitz and Extremespeed that anyone even started to take it seriously except yours truly. Then most recently in 6th gen it got Sacred Fire! I now use Entei on every Fire-Type mono team, and almost every team I've ever set out to make in general. It will always be one of my favorites.
Positives
+ Big boost this gen with the addition of Sacred Fire and that 50% burn rate to your arsenal. Now you don't HAVE to use Flare Blitz which it got from an event at the end of 4th gen, but it's recommend you keep a slot open for it since Sacred Fire has low PP.
+ Still has the same good Atk and Speed stats it always did with Base 115 and 100 respectively
+ Runs a great Choice Band set
Negatives
- Still Requires quite a lot of team support to be completely effective thanks to the weaknesses Fire types share in entry hazards and other very common threats
- No reliable recovery to speak off unlike its buddy Arcanine that gets the Intimidate+ Morning Sun combo. So definitely no bulky sets for our Entei thanks to it's less than stellar defensive stats and movepool
- Speaking of which it could definitely benefit from a more diverse movepool, or at least a couple more addition like Earthquake for example.
- It wishes Flash Fire was already released for that potential extra power boost from Fire-Type moves. Pressure is not bad or anything. It just works hella better on bulkier mons that can stall.
Abilities
Pressure: When this Pokémon is hit by a move, the opponent’s PP lowers by 2 rather than 1. This isn't a bad ability by any means it's just not that great on Entei. Now if we were talking about Suicune we'd be having an entirely different conversation.
Hidden Ability (Not Available):
Flash Fire: Activates when the user is hit by a damaging Fire-type move (including Fire-type Hidden Power). Once activated, user’s Fire-type moves deal 1.5 times damage. While this ability is in effect, this Pokémon is immune to damage from Fire-type attacks and Fire-type Hidden Power (accuracy and effect from these moves are ignored). For Fire-type Pokémon with this ability, Will-O-Wisp activates this ability without having an effect. If a non-Fire-type Pokémon has this ability, Will-O-Wisp will activate the ability and will have an effect. Sadly it doesn't look like it's going to be released anytime soon. Which is a darn shame because Entei could really use it.

Item Attached: Choice Band
Ability: Pressure / Flash Fire
EVs and Nature:
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 Def
Adamant Nature
The title really says it all. It's very Enteimidating, and absolutely nothing wants to switch in to this beast thanks to Sacred Fire's 50% burn rate. Which is the main focus of this set and the attack you'll be spamming most of the time. Sadly thanks to the fact that Sacred Fire has extremely low PP you'll need a second Fire Stab which what Flare Blitz is for. Which is a force to reckoned with in itself since it actually packs more power than Sacred Fire, but it has the added drawback of damaging the user in the process. The last two slots are pretty self explanatory. Stone Edge is here to help you combat other Flash Fire users/Fire types in general like Chandelure or Arcanine, and Extremespeed is a great priority move that helps our friend Entei take out weakened foes in a flash.
Other Options
- Bulldoze is really your only other viable attack option since Entei doesn't get Earthquake unfortunately. You won't need it much in the metagame it primarily sees action in, but it really does surprisingly come in handy in certain niche situations so it's worth noting.
Countering Entei
There's quite a few ways to counter Entei unfortunately. Like most fire types it's very vulnerable to entry hazards like Stealth Rock and Spikes, and if those aren't dealt with quickly it will eat up most of Entei's HP and easy to revenge kill if it's not already all but useless by that point. Secondly you have your bulky water types like Suicune that can take Flash Fire hits very well and Rest off the damage/Burn while it PP stalls you to death. That's really your best option. Bulky Ground types like Rhyperior are almost as bad and they won't be afraid of the damage from Sacred Fire. There's plenty of other things though like Flash Fire users such Chandelure, ,Defensive Arcanine with Intimidate will have no problems taking your attacks even with Stone Edge, and Snorlax can set up on you for days with Curse if you let. Also definitely be on the look out for Mega Ampharos.
