Obstagoon, The Blocking Pokémon. Its voice is staggering in volume. Obstagoon has a tendency to take on a threatening posture and shout-this move is known as Obstruct. It evolved after experiencing numerous fights. While crossing its arms, it lets out a shout that would make any opponent flinch.
Overview
Obstagoon was revealed in Sword and Shield to great aplomb. As an extra evolution of a regional variant based on Gene Simmons of all things, Obstagoon had a lot of hype. And it sort of lives up to that hype too. A varied movepool, and two incredibly potent abilities to jack up its power to terrifying levels can make Obstagoon quite the force. However, its stat line is average at best around the board, which has been felt more and more as stronger and stronger Pokémon have been reintroduced.
Positives
93/101/81 defenses are actually quite reasonable. Obstagoon may not be a massive wall, but it can definitely take a hit or two before going down.
Guts and Defiant are amazing abilities that turn Obstagoon into a force of destruction
Façade and Knock Off make for an incredibly potent STAB combo and coverage moves like Close Combat and Gunk Shot make Obstagoon even harder to resist.
Negatives
Normal/Dark is rather mediocre defensively, packing few resists meaning Obstagoon can’t use its bulk to the fullest.
Base 95 speed, while not bad, means that Obstagoon is relatively easy to outspeed and KO, especially as it lacks priority.

Façade and Knock Off are the key pieces of this set, with Façade’s massive power once burned makes it difficult for many Pokémon to switch in safely. Knock Off is a low risk high power move that will deal incredible damage and disrupt your opponent by removing their Pokémon’s item. Knock Off also synergizes with Façade well, as no Ghost type will willingly switch in to Obstagoon. Close Combat and Gunk Shot provide incredible coverage, with Close Combat hitting many Steel types hard while Gunk Shot crushes Fairy types and Rillaboom. Obstruct guarantees Obstagoon can get the Flame Orb boost up, while Switcheroo enables Obstagoon to punish Fighting switch ins as they will not like the Burn.
DYNAMAX:
Obstagoon becomes fairly bulky after Dynamax and enjoys the Speed Drop from Max Strike and the Attack Boost from Max Knuckle, though do note that a Max Strike Façade is actually weaker than the boosted Façade. Conversely, a Max Darkness Knock Off is stronger vs an Item less opponent.
EVs and Items:
Max Attack and Speed are vital for maximizing damage and getting the drop on slower targets. Flame Orb enables Guts and enables Obstagoon to act as a status Absorber.
Partners:
Moltres -Can switch into any super effective move vs Obstagoon, can threaten the Burn on would be physical attackers and removes Entry Hazards which will chew Obstagoon up quickly in conjunction with the Burn Damage.
Landorus Therian Forme -A pivot that can take Bug and Fighting moves, with Intimidate making Obstagoon bulkier and Stealth Rocks turning 2HKOs into OHKOs
Slowbro -Reilable pivot versus Fighting types that appreciates Obstagoon’s advantages vs opposing Dark and Ghost types and threatens a Scald Burn or Thunder Wave Paralysis on many targets as well.
Slowking Galarian Form -A safe option vs Fighting and Fairy types that it immediately threatens back with STAB
Tapu Lele -Quadruple resists Fighting moves and can easily OHKO back with STAB while setting up a Psychic terrain that protects Obstagoon vs Priority
Countering Obstagoon
Any Fighting type can swiftly OHKO Obstagoon due to its devastating 4x weakness and lack of anti-Fighting coverage, though many of them detest being burned and cannot switch in safely into a boosted Facade. Conkeldurr is a noticeable check, also possessing Guts and can ensure the KO with a Guts Mach Punch, though cannot switch into a Façade. G-Zapdos is naturally faster and can easily punish Obstruct attempts with Defiant. Physically Defensive Buzzwole is the closest we have to a counter, only 3HKOd by Façade and able to easily OHKO and heal off the damage with Drain Punch. Obstagoon lacks priority moves and is worn down quickly by Entry Hazards, Burn damage and Close Combat defense drops, so faster Pokémon like Zeraora and Cinderace can quickly come in for the revenge KO.
