Charizard, the Flame Pokémon. It spits fire that is hot enough to melt boulders. It may cause forest fires by blowing flames. Its wings can carry this Pokémon close to an altitude of 4,600 feet. It blows out fire at very high temperatures. It is said that Charizard's fire burns hotter if it has experienced harsh battles.

Overview

As the first Unrivaled Raid Boss, Charizard continues to reap the benefits of its popularity and enjoy extended access over its contemporaries. And while its base stats may not be anything to write home about, the synergies of Solar Power, Fire STAB and Sunny Day give Chrizard some of the most powerful Fire attacks in Pokémon, able to outright melt anything that doesn’t have an outright absurd amount of Special Bulk and/or resistances. And Charizard further benefits from Game Freak’s consistent love, giving it a fairly wide moveset to cover for its weaknesses.

However, Charizard is not without its downsides. Fire Flying gives cripplingly common weaknesses to Water, Electric and a four times weakness to Rock that ensures Stealth Rock will eat Charizard alive. And the resistances Charizard does have are let down by poor defenses, and Solar Power ripping Charizard’s health to shreds leaving Charizard with little defensive utility on a team. And while Base 100 Speed is good, there are so many faster threats that can outstrip Charizard that aren’t as reliant on the Sun as Charizard is. The generational shift was not kind to Charizard either. Not only did its excellent Mega Forms remain gone, but also Dynamax was removed too, removing a patch to Charizard’s greatest problems. While Charizard may be too fast and too popular to truly fall into disuse, its lack of bulk and vulnerability to Stealth Rocks leave its flames little opportunity to shine competitively.
Positives
Solar Power is a bonkers ability on Charizard, pushing its above average Special Attack into new heights, especially for its Fire STABs.
Wide moveset gives Charizard an answer to most of its checks
Fire Flying gives a healthy array of resistances, facilitating switching in.

Negatives
Common Weaknesses to Water, Electric and a Quadruple weakness to Rock make it difficult to switch Charizard in, especially with Stealth Rocks.
Poor Defenses and Solar Power’s life sapping effect coupled with the above ruins Charizard’s long term defensive utility.

Wallbreaker Charizard exercises its true power in the Sun, melting through the opposition with pure unrelenting power. Get Charizard in while the sun is out against a slow opponent and you place your opponent into a dangerous dance where they must predict well or lose a Pokémon. Solar Power Sun Boosted Overheat has absurd power, KOing many targets that dare think they are bulky and maiming many more. Solar Beam provides invaluable coverage against Rock and Water types that resist Charizard’s Fire STAB. Focus Blast is for Chansey and Blissey while still hitting Dragon types hard. Flamethrower is a secondary reliable STAB that still does tremendous damage while not forcing Charizard out like Overheat.

Tera Types:
Tera Fire is recommended, pushing Charizard’s STAB of Choice to utterly insane heights of power and melting would be walls without recourse. Tera Grass gives weight to Charizard’s Solarbeam and potentially a Grass attack not reliant on Sunny Day while providing valuable resistance to Water and Electric attacks.

EVs and Items:
Max Speed with Timid Nature is necessary to outstrip the many other Base 100 Speed Pokémon. Dropping down to Neutral Speed can lead Charizard to be outsped by positive natured Base 97 Speed and up Pokémon like Great Tusk, Rotom-Wash, Hydreigon, Haxorus, etc. Max investment into Special Attack to deal as much damage as possible. Heavy Duty boots is because of Overheat, enabling Charizard to pivot in multiple times without requiring excessive Stealth Rocks support. If confident in Hazard denial, than Life Orb and Choice Specs are worth consideration for maximum Wallbreaking power. Choice Scarf can turn Charizard into a potent revenge killer in the sun.

Partners:
Torkoal. Charizard needs the Sun and there’s no better setter than Torkoal currently available. In completely unrestricted formats, Koraidon also makes for an excellent partner. Roaring Moon stands out as a fellow Sun Abuser with complimentary offense and ability to pivot into Water and Electric attacks. In turn, Charizard can pivot into potential Burns and, Fighting and Fairy attacks while its health is still up. Great Tusk is another, providing invaluable hazard control, pivoting into Rock attacks, and complimentary offense. Other Sun abusers such as Slither Wing, and Sandy Shocks are also worth consideration.

Other Options:
Fire Blast -while not as powerful as Overheat, not being forced out after using it is valuable unto itself.
Dragon Pulse -hits Dragon types that otherwise resist Fire STAB and Solar Beam, but is underwhelming otherwise.
Ancient Power -hits Armarouge, Ceruledge and Iron Moth harder than anything else.
Hurricane- horrid in Sun, but if out of it or in Rain makes for a great STAB option.
Sunny Day -sometimes you need to setup you own Sun

Charizard’s wide movepool does enable it to reenact its days as Mega Charizard X, and does have distinct advantages over its wall breaking set. Unlike Specially offensive sets, Dragon Dance Charizard has a built in remedy to its speed giving it better match ups against faster opponents. However, being unable to benefit from its higher Special Attack and Solar Power, the drop in power is significant. Dragon Dance is key to this set, pushing Charizard’s Speed from good to great and its Attack into actually painful. Flare Blitz is STAB of choice, having incredible power and the recoil can be useful in racing towards a Blaze Boost. Earthquake provides coverage against Rock and opposing Fire types that can resist Flare Blitz, while Thunder Punch covers the Water types that resist Flare Blitz and threaten Charizard as well.

Tera Types:
Tera Fire is as always king for cranking Charizard’s Damage up to 11. Tera Flying can provide a viable Flying STAB for this set and hits Water and Dragon types hard in turn, while Tera Grass gives valuable Grass coverage normally inaccessible to Physical Charizard while still having great defensive benefits. .

EVs and Items:
Standard sweeper array to pump out as much damage as possible while outspeeding as many targets as possible. Heavy Duty Boots is recommended so Charizard isn’t slaughtered by Stealth Rocks. Otherwise, Charcoal is worth considering for more Fire power, or Sitrus Berry to use in combination with Belly Drum and Acrobatics.

Partners:
Slowbro makes for a fantastic partner, as part of a Grass-Fire-Water core with complimentary offense, Thunder Wave to cripple normally faster targets and Future sight to push for more damage. Other Water types such as Gastrodon and Tatsugiri can also perform a similarly excellent role. Grass types additionally have great synergy with both Charizard and their Water partners, rounding out the Grass Fire Water core. Rotom Mow stands out with Will-o-Wisp to provide opportunity to setup and Volt Switch to get Charizard in safely, while Brute Bonnet and Toadscreul can force setup opportunities with Spore.

Other Options:
Belly Drum -Turn from Attacker to wallbreaker in one move. Acrobatics -Best Flying STAB if using a consumable.

Doubles & VGC Options

As a sun user, Charizard naturally flourishes more in a doubles setting where Weather is naturally stronger in turn. However, losing Gigantamax in the generational shift has been a heavy blow. Charizard now has no way to patch its poor bulk, no Max Airstream to apply pressure and bolster its team Speed, no G-Max Wildfire for a persistent damage over time effect that can’t be dispelled. What does benefit Charizard is that Sun is incredibly potent right now, bolstering the many Scarlet Paradoxes and Fire types that already love the sun while weakening the terrifying Iron Bundle. The popularity of Amoongus and Brute Bonnet alongside Tera Steel leaves no shortage of targets to melt. However, Charizard faces stiff competition in Armarouge who better synergizes with Torkoal thanks to a low speed for Trick Room abuse and Flash Fire which would enable it to utterly wall Charizard if the latter was currently legal. Oh and Charizard is currently not legal in VGC.

Charizard is still incredibly capable of incinerating everything around it despite the loss of Gigantamax, it is just more heavily reliant on team support. Sun Boosted Solar Power Life Orb Heat Wave is devastatingly strong, racking up huge damage quickly and applying significant pressure. Ancient Power is for opposing Fire types like Armarouge, Ceruledge, Iron Moth and Tera Fire Hydreigon who otherwise tank Charizard’s blistering assaults well. Solar Beam rounds out the coverage, hitting Dondozo and Palafin hard. Protect is invaluable in doubles formats, stalling out opponent’s beneficial effects, keeping Charizard alive to re-establish Sun, scout for information, etc. .

Partners & Options:
Flamethrower/Fire Blast/Overheat -having a single target Fire STAB that isn’t walled by Wide Guard is always an option.
Torkoal is necessary for setting up Sun. Charizard lives and dies by the sunlight, so not having it greatly impacts Charizard’s efficacy.
Speed Control is incredibly important, for Charizard to get the jump on the faster targets in doubles. Whether this be Tailwind support from Murkrow or Hydreigon, or Icy Wind from Tatsugiri.
Redirection -Charizard is squishy, so Follow Me Indeedee or Rage Powder Brute Bonnet are invaluable for keeping Charizard up.

Countering Charizard

Against special sets, only the bulkiest of Special Sponges fare well. Blissey, Chansey and Ting-lu all have the bulk to stomach even Charizard’s strongest attacks, but can’t switch directly in without risk of overwhelmed. Armarouge and Ceruledge fare well, only fearing Ancient Power, but walling any other attack with ease.

Managing the sun is even more important. Out of the sun, Charizard’s power drops drastically to manageable levels and can be managed by Rotom-Heat, Florges and Dragalge. Opposing weather setters like Tyranitar, and Pelipper can stop a Charizard before it starts though they must be careful of Focus Blast and Ancient Power respectively.

Physical sets are a different pickle, either being difficult to outspeed or having similarly destructive power with Belly Drum. Dachsbun hard walls Dragon Dance sets, but struggles to do damage without several boosts, while Alomomola excels against sets lacking Grass Tera Blast.

In the end, best way to manage Charizard is to fight Fire with Fire. Whether it is Solar Power from the Special sets or Flare Blitz/Belly Drum from the physical, Charizard is ripping itself to pieces as it tries to do the same to the opposing team. Faster attackers can often easily clean up a Charizard that has wore itself out. Lycanroc Day and Dusk can easily use Accelrock to eviscerate Charizard, while other like Barraskewda, Sandy Shocks, Pawmot can easily OHKO you. As Charizard’s health dwindles, this list increases dramatically.
