Clefable

Clefable, The Fairy Pokémon. It is very wary and rarely shows itself to people. Its ears can hear a pin drop over half a mile away. Rarely seen by people, it is said to be drawn by the full moon to play at deserted lakes. With its acute hearing, it can pick up sounds from far away. It usually hides in quiet places. It is very wary and rarely shows itself to people. Its ears can hear a pin drop over half a mile away.

Overview

Clefable's awesome. In the first three gens, it was a worse Chansey, Blissey, Snorlax, that sorta thing. However, 4th gen brought it something that made it unique; Magic Guard. Immunity to all indirect damage is amazing, and gave Clefable a niche. It had many sets built around this, and found use in sandstorm and hail teams thanks to being immune to the normally damaging weather. With a huge movepool, both full of offensive and support moves, Clefable is incredibly diverse. Sadly, Clefable lost its niche as the Magic Guard Pokémon as Alakazam, Sigilyph, and Reuniclus all get the amazing ability. However, Clefable still has the great movepool and pretty good base stats going for it. Bit of a creepy design... but it could be worse. Could be Igglybuff.

Abilities

Cute Charm: pretty useless. Can sometimes inflict infatuation.
Magic Guard: you're immune to any indirect damage. Stealth Rock, Spikes, burn, poison, sandstorm, hail, recoil, that kind of thing. It's amazing.
Unaware: an underrated ability. Basically, it works like a switch in Haze. A great ability to put a stop to things like Swords Dance, which could sweep your team.

Belly Drum

- Belly Drum
- Facade / Double-Edge
- Fire Punch
- Wish / Softboiled / Drain Punch
Item Attached: Toxic Orb / Life Orb
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs and Nature:
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)

Sadly, Magic Guard doesn't stop Belly Drum's damage. If it did, it'd be so broken. Anyway, Belly Drum gives you +6 attack at the cost of 50% of your max HP. It's the ultimate risk reward move. Facade, when combined with Toxic Orb, has a base power of 210, counting STAB and its effect. Double-Edge should only be used with Life Orb, as that makes it stronger than Facade, and also powers up your other attacks. However, using Toxic Orb and Facade makes you immune to other statuses such as the crippling burn and paralysis that would ruin your sweep. Fire Punch ruins Ferrothorn, Forretress, Skarmory, Steels like that. Wish can be used before Belly Drum to get full healed straight away after use. Softboiled is another recovery move you can use. Drain Punch is mostly for Heatran. Something to note is that you are walled to hell and back by Chandelure, if it runs Flash Fire.

CalmFable

- Calm Mind
- Ice Beam / Shadow Ball
- Thunderbolt / Focus Blast
- Wish / Softboiled
Item Attached: Leftovers / Life Orb
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs and Nature:
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SAtk or 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk) / Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk) / Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)

Calm Mind boosts your Special Attack and Special Defence. It's a great boosting move. Ice Beam and Thunderbolt make for the amazing combination of BeamBolt. Uh, BoltBeam... gets a huge amount of super effective coverage, and hits all but I think 5 Pokémon in the game for neutral. FocusBall provides 100% neutral coverage, but is overall a weaker combination for Clefable. Focus Blast's accuracy isn't up to snuff for a main attacking move. Shadow Ball is a bit weak, being 80 base power. Wish or Softboiled, both work well for a healing move.

Dual Screens

- Reflect
- Light Screen
- Encore
- Wish / Attacking move
Item Attached: Light Clay
Ability: Unaware
EVs and Nature:
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef or 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk) / Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)

With its acceptable bulk, it can pull off a dual screens set effectively. Its ability is what makes it effective. Unaware means you can set up on... set up sweepers, rather than retreat in fear. Reflect doubles your Defence, and Light Screen doubles your Special Defence. Use whichever one you aren't focused in first; if you are running a Defence heavy EV spread, use Light Screen first, and Reflect if you are running the Special Defence spread. Encore forces the opponent to carry on using a move they most likely won't want to, especially if you catch them using a boosting move, which is made useless by Unaware. This gives you the perfect time to set up your screens. Wish can heal the offensive Pokémon you bring in after you set up screens, and also keeps you healthy. An attacking move could be Flamethrower, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Focus Blast, a move that stops you being abolsute Taunt bait.

Unaware of the danger

- Wish
- Flamethrower
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
Item Attached: LeftoversV Ability: Unaware
EVs and Nature:
EVs: 252 HP / 172 Def / 84 SAtk
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)

This set is all about being a counter to common boosting threats. Wish keeps you healthy, which is pretty vital. Flamethrower breaks down Scizor, who often runs a Swords Dance set (and Curse Ferrothorn I guess). Ice Beam is obviously for Dragons like Dragonite, Garchomp and Salamence (and Swords Dance Gliscor). Thunderbolt breaks Gyarados down, and hits stuff like Suicune. Because Unaware makes stat boosts pointless, they are no longer a threat. Only Choice Banded attacks stand a chance of KOing Clefable, whilst you always OHKO... after a bit of residual damage.

Fable of support

- Stealth Rock / Heal Bell / Encore / Gravity / Knock Off / Sing / Thunder Wave / Toxic
- Stealth Rock / Heal Bell / Encore / Gravity / Knock Off / Sing / Thunder Wave / Toxic
- Stealth Rock / Heal Bell / Encore / Gravity / Knock Off / Sing / Thunder Wave / Toxic
- Flamethrower / Ice Beam / Thunderbolt
Item Attached: Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs and Nature:
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef or 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef or 252 HP
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk) / Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)

Support all the way. It has a huge support movepool. Stealth Rock is the best entry hazard in the game, Heal Bell offers you status protection and team support, Encore can lead to a set up of your own Pokémon, Gravity is another team support move, Knock Off can cripple the opponent by removing their items, Sing is a poor sleep move but could be used if you really wanted to, Thunder Wave deals paralysis, Toxic ruins bulky Pokémon with extremely damaging poison. For an offensive move, you have the standard 95/100 moves, as well as stuff like Shadow Ball, and any other special attacks you want to try really. You could even try physical attacks.

EVs & Natures

Belly Drum
You don't want anything but Attack and Speed. Seriously, running anything else is pretty silly.

CalmFable
Max HP and max Defence makes Clefable a significantly bulky threat when combined with Calm Mind. If you want to be more offensive, run 252 Special Attack and 252 Speed.

Dual Screens
You could run Speed if you wanted, but Clefable's Speed is so low it isn't worth investing in for a set like this.

Unaware of the danger
Run a load more Special Attack if you don't want to rely on them having taken residual damage. You need a stat of 244 to OHKO Salamence without Stealth Rock.

Fable of support
You can run the Defence based set for taking physical hits, the Special Defence based set for taking special hits, or the hybrid which leaves you with 394/242/242.

Other Options

Blizzard, Body Slam, Charge Beam, Cosmic Power, Counter, Endeavor, Grass Knot, Hidden Power [Fighting], Icy Wind, Magic Coat, Moonlight, Protect, Psych Up, Seismic Toss, Snatch, Tickle, Trick
Blizzard is an acceptable move on a hail team, as Clefable won't be affected by the hail.
Body Slam has nice base power and can paralyse.
Charge Beam is an alternative way of boosting your Special Attack to Calm Mind.
Cosmic Power turns you into a very tough to break wall, but leaves you with your average offences.
Counter works well with your good HP and average Defence.
Endeavor can be used on a FEAR set, with some damaging weather like sandstorm or hail.
Grass Knot is an alternative special attack you could use.
Hidden Power [Fighting] could be used with Shadow Ball rather than Focus Blast.
Icy Wind can lower the opponent's Speed and deal some alright damage.
Magic Coat stops you from being hit with sleep or anything like that. Handy.
Moonlight is an alternative healing move, that heals you to full when you are in sun.
Protect protects you on the turn you wait for your Toxic Orb to kick in. It also stalls for poison damage and scouts.
Psych Up can be effective if you use it at the right time and get the right boosts.
Seismic Toss is an alternative attack on any bulky set, as it has a set damage of your level, whereas the other moves may not be as effective in some situations.
Snatch can steal you some boosts and what not.
Tickle can force switches and set up another Pokémon.
Trick can be effective with status orbs and Choice items, if you decide to use them.

Double & Triple Battle Options

Magic Guard and acceptable stats, as well as a good movepool all add up to a Pokémon usable in double and triples. It has the support moves like Encore, and isn't weak to any multi targeting attacks. Having said that, it isn't resistant to them either. Although Clefable's stats aren't exactly the worst, they are all fairly... meh. You could use it for Gravity support and stuff like that, but it doesn't really have anything to WOW you so much that you have to use it. It's an acceptable choice, but... MEHHHHHHHH.

Partners

Depending on the set, you'll want different partners. For the dual screener, offensive Pokémon that can take advantage of the doubled defences is vital. The Belly Drummer needs Jellicent, Heatran, Chandelure, Magcargo (HEHEHEHE) removed before it can attempt the sweep, so counters to those Pokémon are important. An idea is to combine it with Memento Dugtrio, as Dugtiro can take out all of these Pokémon with a STAB Earthquake (Jellicent will have to be damaged beforehand), and then ruin the next Pokémon with Memento, which will force them to switch out, giving Clefable the perfect opportunity to use Belly Drum or Wish. The Calm Mind set needs Fighting support, or else Chansey and Blissey will have a field day. Conkeldurr, Breloom, whoever.

Countering Clefable

Countering something that has no counters... well, that's a bit of a lie this time. Clefable actually has a few semi safe switch ins.

Clefable will most likely be seen in the lower tiers rather than the higher ones, but it does have its place in both. In both tiers, Fighting Pokémon will be your worse nightmare. They can easily KO Clefable, and aren't really hurt by any of your attacks (outside of a +6 Double-Edge). As I've said, the Belly Drum set does not like Heatran, Chandelure, guys that resist Normal and Fire. The Calm Mind set is stopped by standard special walls like Chansey, Blissey, and also the Pokémon that resist BoltBeam. Magnezone, Shedinja, Mamoswine with Thick Fat, and Lanturn. Another problem for Clefable is Taunt. Most of its sets require some kind of set up, which Taunt ruins. However, because of how many possible options Clefable has, countering it can be difficult until you find out its set. Overall, Clefable is a cool Pokémon. It has a ton of options, but doesn't really have an outstanding factor about it. The term jack of all trades, master of none sums Clefable up perfectly. Magic Guard made it unique, but now more Pokémon get it, Clefable has lost its niche. I guess because of its huge amoury of options, it still has a uniqueness about it. Clefable is generally outclassed in what it tries to do, be it walling, sweeping, whatever. I like it though, and I'd suggest using it before writing it off.
