Character Overview:
Crystal, nicknamed Crys, is the female protagonist of the GSC series. Although she is also a Pokedex Holder of Johto, her journey began much later than her two Johto peers, Gold and Silver. At a very young age, Crys was coached by her mother to become a capture specialist, and spent a considerable amount of time training on Mt. Mortar. During her training, she fell and broke her arms, forcing her to continue training with her legs and feet instead. Because of this, she has grown accustomed to perform her captures by kicking out Pokeballs, which allows her to aim more accurately.
With the exception of two, she met most of her team members on Mt. Mortar, and every one of them has something that fits a common 'star' theme, either by chance or by intention. They each play an important role on her capture team, be it trapping, immobilizing or weakening wild Pokemon. As a capture specialist, also named the Capturer by Oak, Crys is familiar with center of life force concept, which is the specific spot on a Pokemon's body that produces the highest capture rate when hit. She and her mother are both acquainted with Kurt the ball-maker, who provides them with special Pokeballs he creates from Apricorns. Excluding legendary and starter Pokemon, Crys has captured at least one of each Pokemon species, and also rare ones that have different colours or unusual physical appearances.
Before the beginning of her quest to complete the Pokedex, Crys volunteered at Earl's Pokemon Academy at Violet City, a place that looks after orphans, Emerald being one of them. It was Crys's heroic actions in risking her life to raise funds for the place that earned Emerald respect, leading to his aspiration to become a Dex Holder later. Due to this, Crys shares a special bond with Emerald among the other orphans, and watches over him like an elder sister, similar to the relationship between Blue and Silver.
Crys is usually gentle and amiable, but also has a serious and perhaps intimidating side when it comes to work. Her aggressive and enthusiastic attitude in Pokemon capturing overwhelmed Oak, terrified Bill, and Gold is fond of calling her the representative of Club Serious. She and Gold often have disputes with each other due to their opposite personalities, but the two gradually became close companions throughout their adventure together. In the Emerald series, she successfully got Ruby and Sapphire to join her side in scorning Gold's bragging, although the same cannot be said for Emerald. Crys is also acquainted with Eusine, a Suicune hunter, and although the girl initially disagreed to many of Eusine's tricks and gadgets, the two eventually became friends. Crys currently works as Oak's assistant, and stations either at his Kanto, Johto or Hoenn Science Lab branch.
Crys's design is based on the female protagonist of the third sequel to Pokemon Gold and Silver, Pokemon Crystal, a Gameboy Color title. Her appearance is almost identical to her game counterpart, with the exception of a pair of star-shaped earrings, and her hair colour, which is dark blue instead of the game character's greenish blue. Occasionally, her hair has been depicted as a chestnut shade of brown.
Crys sometimes wears a straw coloured skirt over her shorts, and puts on a white coat when she is working as Prof. Oak's assistant. Her outfit has not changed throughout the GSC series otherwise, and remains the same even when she returned in the Emerald series. In the HGSS series, her mother gave her a new outfit which matches that of her HGSS game counterpart. Her hairstyle remained the same and kept its dark-blue hue. Over the years, Crys's eyes have ranged between various shades of blue, from sky blue, navy blue to purplish blue.
Crys's journey began when she was in search of funds for the renovation of Earl's Pokemon School, and answered to Bill's recruitment, which sought a trainer to complete the version II Pokedex for Prof. Oak and had high financial rewards. She earned the professor's trust after demonstrating her capture skills on three wild Slugmas, and promptly began her voyage across Johto after receiving the third Pokedex. On her way, she was convinced by Elm's Chikorita to accept it into her team, and also made friends with Bill and Lt. Surge, after saving both men from their respective troubles.
Near the construction site of the Battle Tower, Crys encountered the legendary Pokemon Suicune, and was immediately captured by its beauty. She started chasing down the water beast, and soon met Eusine, who was also a Suicune hunter. The two had many disagreements at the beginning, but gradually found common ground through their collaboration against Team Rocket. With Eusine's help, Crys caught up with Suicune at the Tin Tower and had a showdown with it, but was unfortunately defeated and temporarily lost her confidence in capturing. The reencounter with her mother brought Crys back to her senses, and she trained herself on Mt. Mortar once again to regain her skills.
Later, Crys met Yellow on the seaside of Olivine, and initially doubted her credibility. However, her uncertainty quickly dissolved when Yellow demonstrated her healing abilities, and after she showcased her own capturing skills, the two immediately developed a strong respect for each another. Crys finally encountered Gold and Silver in their fight against Lugia at the Whirl Islands, and afterwards headed to the Indigo Plateau with Gold on Prof. Oak's request to uncover Mask Of Ice's real identity.
There, they battled Lugia and Ho-oh who were under the masked man's command, until Misty, Blaine and Lt. Surge took over with the three legendary beasts. Unfortunately, the gymleaders failed to stop the masked man, and Suicune was trapped within its own Crystal Wall Seal. After Eusine rescued it with his Clear Bell, Suicune chose Crys as its new partner, and together with Entei and Raikou, they headed to Ilex Forest where they eventually entered the voids of time to chase after Pryce. After the battle was over, Crys combined the existing data from her seniors, and successfully completed the version II Pokedex.
2 years after the Mask Of Ice incident, Prof. Oak and Crys sent Emerald off to the Battle Frontier to protect and capture the phantom Pokemon, Jirachi, since its ability to grant wishes was the only way to revive the five petrified Dex Holders. Crys lent her massive collection of Pokemon, which she caught for Oak's research, to Emerald for his concurrent challenge at the 7 facilities, and supervised his attempt to capture Jirachi at the Artisans Cave over the Pokegear. However, the capture was interfered by the armoured man, Guile Hideout, and Jirachi got away.
Stationing at the Hoenn branch of Oak's Science Lab, Crys kept in contact with Emerald to monitor the latest happenings, and compiled his findings into reports for Oak to analyze. On the fifth day of the Frontier's opening week, Crys arrived at the Battle Frontier personally with Gold to assist the Hoenn Dex Holders, the third stage of Prof. Oak's plan to reverse the petrifaction of Red, Green, Blue, Yellow and Silver. She created a transparent house for Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald to learn the ultimate attacks from the metal rings she and Gold received from Brinca, and engaged in a fierce aerial battle with Gold against the giant sea monster summoned by Guile Hideout to stall time.
When Emerald finally succeeded in channelling his wish to Jirachi, reviving their five seniors, she joined forced with the other Dex Holders to defeat Guile Hideout and his giant sea monster by their powerful combined ultimate attacks. At the very end, right before Archie, the real identity of Guile Hideout, vanished, Crys picked up from the man's broken last words that the real culprit behind everything might still be at large out there.
3 years after the Sevii Island events, Team Rocket resurfaced once again in Johto. Crys was taking the children of Earl's Pokemon School to a field trip at the newly opened Safari Zone when she incidentally ran into Silver in the park. After learning of Team Rocket's resurrection and the mysterious disappearance of Lance, Crys decided to join Silver on his quest, and together they headed towards Ecruteak City to seek out Morty. However, they were ambushed by Ariana of the Four Generals on Route 38, and Crys opted to stay behind to fight while letting Silver continue on his way to Ecruteak. The three other Generals also gathered on the spot, and soon enough, the Alpha Pokemon Arceus appeared. Astounded by the Pokemon's presence, Crys attempted to capture it before Team Rocket could, but was only able to retain it in a Pokeball momentarily before it broke free. She then gave chase to Arceus as it flew towards Ecruteak, but it knocked her down from the sky.
Later, she was found by Silver, and when the two arrived at the Ruins of Alph where Gold was battling Arceus, a synchrony between the Alpha Pokemon and the 16 Plates Silver collected took them to the Sinjoh Ruins. There, the Four Generals chained Arceus onto the Mystri Stage, and after Silver was forced to hand over the Plates, Archer overwhelmed Crys, Gold and Silver with Arceus's Multitype ability before starting the creation of Dialga, Palkia and Giratina, in hopes of constructing the most formidable force ever so as to get Giovanni to return. When Silver threw himself out to the Mystri Stage to distract the Generals, Crys and Gold got their three starter Pokemon to unleash the ultimate attacks, which managed to vaporize the dragon trio and let Arceus regain the 16 Plates. Unfortunately, the dragons materialized once more, and when Lance, Giovanni and Pryce appeared, it was revealed that Arceus wanted to destroy mankind and thus created the trio. Finally, Gold was able to pacify Arceus, and peace was restored to Johto.
